What is the effect on the environment?: Some nuclear power plants remove large quantities of water from a lake or river, which could affect fish and other aquatic life. Huge numbers of animals had to be slaughtered because there were contaminated by radioactive material. A small leak of radioactive materials from a nuclear power plant could have far reaching environmental and human health implications. Radioactive waste is hazardous to most forms of life and the environment. There are many different ways in which the radioactive waste can travel. The air, the ground, ground water, transportation systems and agricultural consumption can all lead to human ingestion or contact with contamination.
