The present Project W.A.T.E.R. is developed by five European colleges from France, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Romania. It receives funds during two years as of 1st August 2008 from the European Community under the Comenius Programme, an initiative of the European Commission and part of its Life Long Learning Programme. The Comenius Programme seeks to develop knowledge and understanding among young people and educational staff of the diversity of European cultures, languages and values. It is named after the so called teacher of the nations John Amos Comenius (1592-1670), known among other things for his motto:

Omnia sponte fluant, absit violentia rebus (lat.) - Everything flows self-propelled, violence shall stand apart.

Objectives

General objective: The participating colleges want their students to become aware that they are part of a United Europe, despite their national and cultural diversity. How to respect and preserve environment is a current and frequent question in all European countries. Young people can easily identify with this demand and even more if related to water resources management. The project aims to encourage pupils to act responsibly towards their environment and to be aware of consequences of local decisions at a European scale.

Information exchange through Information and Communication Technology (ICT), along with visits to different countries, shall provide the students with a perception of personal and collective contributions they can make to the preservation of natural resources and landscape. Field work outside the classroom in the partner countries shall provide opportunities to participate in preservation activities and feel part of a bigger, the European Community.

Specific objective: Our purpose is to make everybody aware of the current situation of water management in the world. We intend to address some problems of water resources mismanagement, aiming to reduce negative effects on a global scale:

  • drought
  • rising sea levels
  • shortage of potable water
  • salinization of underground wells
  • water pollution
  • water mismanagement
  • pollution
  • deforestation

Mission

  • Establish local sustainable solutions for water management and environmental issues.
  • The use of their mother tongue for pupils to become familiar with environmental issues.
  • Disseminate their research findings in English.
  • Have students reflect on the different aspects of global water management and its consequences.
  • Help students to learn team work, to bear the consequences and to share solutions without considering their social, ethnic or national differences.
  • Encourage students to select the measures they want to follow up and to evaluate their achievements.

Themes

The associated colleges have agreed upon to work out five themes related to the general theme of:
