Fossil Power

Introduccion

We think that the Fossil Power is not the best but is very effective because so much electricity can be genereted using only coal, oil and natural gas, but the main disadvantage of fossil fuels is the pollution.

All the machines of modern life require energy to make them run. About 90 percent of that energy comes from burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include petroleum (oil), coal, and natural gas. These materials are called fossil fuels because, like fossils, they are the remains of organisms that lived long ago. Organisms are plants, animals, and other living things.

  • Fossil fuel is a source of non-renewable energy.
  • Fossil fuel is a general term for buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years.
  • Fossil fuels are the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world, contributing 3/4 of all carbon, methane and other greenhouse gas emissions.

Comment of Ms. Doolaard

You did not describe how it works; you just gave Some general information.

Fossil power:

Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy that were formed more than 300 million years ago. They are made of plants and animals matter.

Advantages

  • So much electricity can be generated using coal. So that is great.
  • The transportation of oil and gas to the power stations is very easy.
  • A fossil power station can be built almost anywhere.

Disadvantages

  • The main disadvantage of fossil fuels is pollution.

When we burn any fossil fuel produces carbon dioxide. So that is bad for our planet.

Comment by Ms. Doolaard

Please say this in your own words.

My part:

What is the effect on the enviroment of fossil power:

Disatvantages:
  • It produces a lot of Carbon Dioxide, it produces more Carbon Dioxide than burning oil or gas
  • This Carbon Dioxide increases 25% of the global warming
  • When the factories make fossil fuel a certain gas is produced this gas contains: carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and hydrocarbons this is also very bad for the enviroment and global warming
  • It can also cause water pollution for example when they spill oil in waterways the whole waterway is affected because the oil has so many stuff in it it will spread very fast
  • There also a lot of air pollution with the gas because of al the gasses in it it produces a lot of smog and this is one of the most important causes of air pollution
* How can we improve this horrible effects? :
  • We can start using renewable energy, this is wind, solar etc. This is also good because when everybody starts using this they will decrease the threat when the fossil power runs out.

Comment by Ms. Doolaard

It was made more environment friendly in the past, so why couldn't we make it even more environmentally friendly? So what should we do, should it be forbidden?

Where can you found fossil power?

  • Fossil fuels is found over time in sand, sedimant and in rock buried these are the organic matter.
  • These materials formed large quantities of fuels.

Where can you find coal?

  • Coal is found underneath the ground.
  • The energy in coal comes from the energy by plants that lived million years ago, when the earth was partly covered with swampy forests.

COALFORMATION.gif

  • There are two ways to remove coal.
  • Surface mining:
*It is less expensive than underground mining.
*It can be used when the coal is buried fewer than 200 feet underground.
*The large machines remove the top soil and layers of rock to expose the coal.
*When it is finished the dirt and rock are returned to the pit. The soil is replaced, and the area is replanted.
  • Underground mining:
*Is used when the coal is buried several hundred feet below the surface.
*Miners use elevators to go deep in the ground to run machines to dig out the coal that is in the ground.

Where can you find gas/oil ?

  • Million of years ago, the plants and animals lived in the ocean died and build up a layer at the bodem of the ocean.
  • Over time the sand and silt has turned into rock, covered the organic material, and trapped it beneath the rock.
  • Pressure and heat changed some of this organic material into coal, some into oil and some into natural gas.
  • The oil platform in the ocean drill down through layers of sand, silt and rock to reach the rock formations that contain oil and gas deposits

How does fossil power work.jpg

how does fossil power work
  • coal or oil is burned to produce heat
  • the heat converts water into steam
  • the steam is used to drive a turbine, within the turbine is a wire, surrounded by electromagnets
  • this generates electricity

what is a turbine?
  • A steam turbine generator is a device that uses steam to rotate a turbine generator to produce electricity.
  • Steam turbines use water that is heated to extremely high temperatures and converted into steam to rotate the blades of a turbine, in order to create mechanical or rotational energy. This rotational energy caused by the high pressured steam turbine is used to generate electricity in an attached generator. Steam turbine generators require an outside fuel source to heat water into the steam needed for electric production.

fossil power:

where does fossil power come from?

  • Fossil power comes from fossil fuels which are found within the rocks of continents, islands, and below ocean and sea beds all over the earth. It is believed that this non-renewable form of energy was formed millions of years ago from geological processes that acted on dead animals and plants. there are a loads of diffrent types of fossil fuels for example: coal, oil, natral gases, wood, biomass and nuclear.

How are they to be found?

coal

  • They are made up of layers of earth which for example, most of our coal was formed about 300 million years ago, when most of the earth was covered by steamy swamps. As plants and trees died, their remains sank to the bottom of the swampy areas, and after a while layers are formed and eventually forming a soggy, dense material called peat.

natural gases and oil

  • We now know how coal is made but what about oil and natural gas? oil is formed in the sea, as the microscopic plants and animals live in the sea and they absorbed energy from the sun, which was stored as a carbon molecules in their bodies. then they die and fall to the sea bed. usually, when a mining operation locates a place for oil , it will also have found a source for natural gas. These two types of fossil fuels are usally found together, making it easyer to harvest. meaning it is also created in the smae way.

Comment by Ms. Doolaard

Nuclear is not a fossil fuel. In which countries can we find fossil fuels? Are we dependent of these countries?
