What is Tidal Energy?
Tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of the tides into electricity or other useful forms of power. The tide is created by the gravitational effect of the sun and the moon on the earth causing cyclical movement of the seas. Tidal energy is therefore an entirely predictable form of renewable energy, which can be harnessed in two forms:
CURIOSITIES: Do you know what? The largest tidal power station in the world (and the only one in Europe) is in the Rance estuary in northern France, near St. Malo. It was built in 1966.
A major drawback of tidal power stations is that they can only generate when the tide is flowing in or out - in other words, only for 10 hours each day. However, tides are totally predictable, so we can plan to have other power stations generating at those times when the tidal station is out of action.
Why tidal power is so important!!!!!! Tidal energy is important because its a way to help preserve nature, also it is renewable and leaves no pollution.

History: Tidal power, also called tidal energy, is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful forms of power, mainly electricity. The history of tidal power stretches into antiquity. The earliest evidence of the use of the oceans’ tides for power conversion dates back to about 900 A.D., but it is likely that there were predecessors lost in the anonymity of prehistory. Early tidal power plants utilized naturally-occurring tidal basins by building a barrage (dam) across the opening of the basin and allowing the basin to fill on the rising tide, impounding the water as the tide , and then releasing the impounded water through a waterwheel, paddlewheeel or similar energy-conversion device. The power was typically used for grinding grains into flour. Power was available for about two to three hours, usually twice a day.
Tidal power what is the environmental impact of tidal power?
Tidal power is a renewable source of electricity wich does not result in the production and discharge of gases responsible for gases or acid rain. use of tidal power can also go down. changing of tidal flows by damming a bay or estuary can lead to negative impacts on shoreline ecosystems but the impact depend on the location where the tidal power takes place. It has been estimated that in the bay of bundy tidal power plants could decrease by 15cm and barrage sytems include distruction of habitat.

How does it work:
- Tidal energy is produced through the use of tidal energy generators. These large underwater turbines are placed in areas with high tidal movements, and are designed to capture the kinetic motion of the ebbing and surging of ocean tides in order to produce electricity. Tidal power has great potential for future power and electricity generation because of the massive size of the oceans.
Where can you find “plants” of this source?
- Tidal power plants only work in the see because the movement of water makes the tidal move and then it produces energy. Tidal plants work the best in see´s were the water moves very much because then the tidal wil move more, and more energy is produced.
